Bio
SERGEY SERGEEV
Born in 1953 in Leningrad, USSR.
In 1973, he graduated from the Theatrical Decoration Department of the Leningrad Art School named after V. A. Serov (now the Saint Petersburg Art School named after N. K. Roerich).
From 1973, he continued his studies at the Leningrad Higher School of Industrial Art named after V. I. Mukhina (now the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design) but did not complete his education due to professional reasons.
During this period, Sergeev began studying techniques (ground and layering), etching graphics, and the philosophy of the Northern Renaissance of Flanders (Lucas Cranach, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Pieter Bruegel, and Hieronymus Bosch). At the same time, he was influenced by the artistic traditions of Northern China, particularly Zen Buddhism in imagery. The main concept he developed was « simplicity and complexity. »
At that time, he also began working at the Mariinsky Theatre as a costume designer and contributed to the creation of costumes and sets for the renowned ballet The Creation of the World, with the principal role performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov. Later, he worked at the « Lennauchfilm » studio as an animation artist and assistant director.
From 1975, Sergeev became a freelance artist and a participant in the nonconformist movement. He never joined the official Union of Artists of the USSR or the Russian Federation for ideological reasons. In 1975, Sergeev became one of the founders of the « Alipiy » group, whose first exhibition was held in his apartment.
Starting in 1981, he was one of the organizers and active participants in all exhibitions of the Experimental Fine Arts Society (TEII).
In 1995, he became one of the founders and the permanent art director of the contemporary art gallery D137 in Saint Petersburg, which later became one of the iconic galleries of the time (www.d137.org).
From 2013, Sergeev began working in France and permanently settled there in early 2022.
Sergeev holds the status of an official artist in France and is a member of the artists’ association « La Maison des Artistes. »
In 2023, he participated in the establishment of the FABLE association (France. Art. Beauté. Liberté d’expression), where he serves as its secretary. FABLE is an international artists’ association for those living in France or other countries who love France and its culture.
Sergeev has a studio in Haute-Savoie, where he organizes exhibitions and meetings for members of the FABLE association. In 2024, he achieved great success with an exhibition at the renowned contemporary art venue Ecuries de Saint-Hugues à Cluny, France.
Today, his works, exhibited since 1975, can be found in museums and collections such as the Hermitage Museum (Hermitage -Vyborg), the State Russian Museum, the Sergey Kuryokhin Foundation, the ERARTA Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Nonconformist Art in Saint Petersburg, the Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA, the Kolodzei Art Foundation in the United States, the Sandretto Foundation in Italy, as well as in many private collections, such as Helen Mirren and Taylor Hackford in the USA.
